Doug Su is a photographer based in Sydney.

He began taking photographs in the early 2010s. At first, there was no particular purpose behind it. He photographed friends, places he travelled to, landscapes, and things that happened around him. For a long time, photography was simply an interest. He learned about cameras, spent a lot of time photographing landscapes, and took pictures of things he wanted to remember.

During the pandemic, and after losing members of his family, his relationship with photographs gradually changed. Looking back at old pictures, he began to notice that some of the most ordinary ones had become important for simple reasons: the people in them were no longer there, places had changed, and parts of life had passed.

Since then, he has paid more attention to ordinary people, places, and the changes taking place around them. Much of his recent work has been made in China and Australia. He is interested in how change appears in everyday life, and in things that may look different, or no longer exist, with time.

For him, photography is a way of looking carefully and leaving a record.
